RW&BC_Iliff.jpg

At a forging demonstration last year, knife maker Len Landrum shows Cocke County Mayor Iliff McMahan Jr. the basics of forging metal into useful items.
Cosby -On Saturday, October 8th, members of the American Bladesmith Society will offer a demonstration of hand forging knife blades, heat tempering, and finishing the blades. Wes Byrd, a Youth Coordinator for the A.B.S. will be on hand to conduct a special hands-on class for young people. There is no cost for this class, but a parent must be on hand for the child to participate. The Bladesmiths will also put on a Cutting Competition at 2:00, demonstrating the amazing cutting capability of their best blades.
"If you've never seen a professional cutting competition," says Len Landrum, ABS Journeyman Bladesmith, "it will boggle your mind what these blades are capable of."
This event is sponsored by Treasures Of Appalachia, and will be held on the grounds of Holloway's County Home at 3892 Hwy 321, near the intersection of Jones Cove Road and Hwy 321 in Cosby. The event will
run from 10:00 AM until 5:00 PM. Parking and admission are free.
Other local craftsmen will also be on hand and the Treasures of Appalachia gallery will be open for your shopping pleasure. One of these craftsmen will be bowl maker Ed Huskey, who will demonstrate how he uses cutting edges to carve out traditional wooden bowls.
Treasures of Appalachia, Inc. is a non-profit Art & Craft Gallery that offers the works of 39 Cocke County artisans. Everything in the store is locally made, and hand crafted.
