The Second Annual Apple Pickn'Days Art & Craft Gathering was held on October 1st and 2nd. Again this year the highlight was an apple pie baking contest. This year the lead judge was Karen Valentine, head chef at Christopher Place in Newport. Assisting her were Charlotte Leibrock candidate for the TN House of Representatives as amateur baker and Bill Knudson of Newport.
Grand prize winner was Marilyn Benson of Newport who received a $75.00 gift certificate to Food City. Marilyn said, "This is the first contest I've ever entered. I really didn't expect to win. Mom usually wins." Her mother, well known baker Wilma Proffitt who had obviously taught her daughter well, was on hand as well.
Second prize was a $50.00 Food City gift certificate donated by Kevin Halcomb, Manager of Food City East, and it went to Dixie Waye of Kingsport TN.
Third prize, a $25.00 Food City gift certificate from Food City West, was awarded to Tammy Francis of Newport.
After the judging, all pies were sold with the proceeds going to Smoky Mountain Home Health & Hospice, Inc. who services 12 East Tennessee counties.
The BBQ Garden & Café, located across Hwy 321 from the high

school in Cosby brought their barbecued pulled pork sandwiches, barbecued chicken sandwiches, potato salad, cole slaw, chips and beverages, all of which met with rave reviews.
On Saturday the live entertainment included The Faith Trio and The Boone Brothers & Company. Rain interrupted the concert and sent many of the crafters packing. The bands took refuge in the BBQ Garden tent - the smell of that barbecue just drew them in - and a pickin party ensued with the young Boone Brothers getting some fingering lessons from the more experienced Dennis Galyon of the Faith Trio.
Once the rain eased, the Boone Brothers & Company "took the stage" from inside Holloway's gazebo, which offered more protection for the band and their instruments than the performance tent. Shortly after the music resumed the sun came out, the band came out of their box, and those hardy souls who had come to hear the band gathered round and were treated to a wonderful performance.
"This is the last show of our regular season," said Doug Bittinger 'roadie' for Treasures Of Appalachia, "But we will be co-hosting A Great Day in the Country with Holloway's Country Home on October 30th and 31st. This is a special event celebrating rural life. We'll have a

cake walk, a church service Sunday morning led by Jonathan Pflug, lots of great gospel music including The Faith Trio, The Camerons and award winning Southern Gospel star, Mark Bishop on Saturday. This is a free concert, so we encourage everyone to bring a chair and come enjoy the music.
Holloway's will be having a huge fabric sale and a free quilting workshop, Treasures will have many of its members on hand to demonstrate their art, and of course we'll have some great food."
